Bridging the Gap
"Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me."
Matthew 25:40
Embedded in the values of the Malabar Mission Society is a commitment to practicing the words of the Gospel and living in the service of God — a service that entails compassion, concern, care, and community. As we seek to know and understand 'our neighbour', we dream of creating a vision that embraces, and includes, both compassionate outreach .... and mission outreach. Together, these elements — when carried into neighbouring towns, villages and cities — are essential components in building bridges to communities, and families, all around us. Whether the community is a local neighbourhood, or a continent thousands of miles away, we are all called to respond to the needs of others through care and concern, sacrifice and generosity. Our motivation is in creating friendships ... because in creating friendships, we open the door for the Word of God.
Writing in his book 'Muslims and the Gospel: Bridging the Gap', Rev. Dr. Roland Miller reminds us ...
We may feel confident about our knowledge of the meaning of the gospel — it is the good news of God's grace in Christ Jesus our Lord. We may be somewhat less confident as to the core identity of Muslims, since global events have produced a confusing image. We may be least aware of the dilemmas that history and humanity have created for a true linking of Muslims and the gospel, making it a task that calls for the best of the sharing arts. These dilemmas, on the other hand, have produced one blessing. They highlight the need to recover for our time the Biblical principal of deep friendship. It is the 'and' that links 'Muslims-Gospel', the substrate that underlines God's mission, the energy of hope."
As an organization dedicated to extending God's love in Christ, the Malabar Mission Society operates a mission-directed "Care Program" that focusses on teaching — and demonstrating — Christ's perfect love .... while at the same time revealing 'how caring for others' can have a healing effect both on the people of India ... and on the supporters and volunteers that help us in building bridges to Malabar; for we only need to take the first (initial) steps of 'caring and concern' to discover the immensity of compassion .... and the power of generosity.
Our hope is that, in 'Bridging the Gap', we will come to share with one another that Love of God that knows no boundaries, and no barriers — for the Love of God is truly the rhythm of life, drawing us both to one another, and to the Divine.
It's our desire that .. this mission — our outreach to Malabar — may touch your heart in the same way that it has touched those 'servants of God' working so passionately to care for our friends in India. It is a job that takes more than simply ideas and commitment; it 's a job that takes — above all else — the love of God, the life of Jesus, and the power of the Spirit. As God moves us in friendship towards one another ... we will find ourselves creating a better world, and a fuller humanity ... experienced through the lives of people who care for each other.
Please join us in our Mission to Malabar. It is a journey of friendship and love. And a mission of care and compassion. It is the Way of Jesus .... alive today ... and growing tomorrow. Forever calling us to share the Good News of God's Love .... for all people.
"I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there is mercy and generosity ... (for) man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden, but never extinguished."
- Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom (1994)
